Mon’s Punchlines cartoon sets out poignantly the emotions of the archaeological team and the disappointment many Singaporeans feel about “treasures” being left buried, perhaps for another 700 years until the new structures above the site crumble or another redevelopment takes place there. I commend the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies and its volunteers for pressing its case and obtaining approval for the dig, and finding the treasures against all odds. I am aghast that they were given such a short time to dig, and that the authorities would adamantly stop the dig and authorise the commencement of work which would bury, or even destroy, the treasures beneath. Perhaps NHB should have the authority to take over such sites and delay all activities which could destroy buried valuable artefacts.... Continue Reading
