A construction company and its employee were fined S$150,000 and S$40,000 respectively under the WSH Act on Thurs after an accident that led to the death of a worker and the injury of another. The accident happened during a soil excavation project at Sunview Way involving Yong Xing Construction Pte Ltd and its Project Manager Zhong Jia Xiang, MOM said on Thurs. Dewan Md Ratul, Sheikh Mohammed Sapan, and four other co-workers were manually excavating soil underneath an existing box drain at the construction site on Sept 19, 2015, when a slab of concrete collapsed, killing Dewan and injuring Sheikh Mohammed. MOM said in its investigation findings that Yong Xing Construction’s risk assessment was inadequate, and its work processes either failed to account for the concrete slab, or deemed it irrelevant to the manual excavation work.
