More than 300,000 HDB households in one-, two- and three-room flats will receive vouchers to help them switch to energy- and water-efficient appliances, under a programme launched on Sat by NEA and PUB. The S$25 million Climate-Friendly Households Programme was first announced in Mar and was rolled out on Sat as part of the launch of this year’s Clean and Green Singapore campaign. NEA highlighted the impact that the programme could have on reducing energy and water consumption in Singapore. “Refrigerators are one of the most energy-intensive household appliances, accounting for about 17 per cent of the total electricity consumption in Singapore households,” it said. If each eligible households replaced one shower fitting with a water-efficient model, they would save up to 1.1 million gallons of water per day, with each home’s annual water bill dropping by about S$10 to S$20. As for LED lights, all eligible households who make the switch can collectively save S$3.7 million in annual energy costs, said NEA.
